The zebra

Story Summary:
Stripes is set in a semi-arid landscape in Kenya, home to both pastoralist tribes and a great diversity of wildlife. Two boys set out from their homes to take their sheep and goats out to graze. Among the livestock is a funny-looking lamb with a striped coat. The lamb catches the attention of a silly zebra. The boys don’t know what to do when suddenly one of their flock is stolen by the zebra.

The story is about connections. The connections between people with each other, and between people and animals. The connection between the boys and the livestock they take care of. And their desire to have a connection with the wildlife around them.

The story features a Grevy’s zebra, which are very endangered. There are only about 2500 left in the world, and are mostly found in Kenya. Stay tuned to the updates section for more drawings, photos and videos of the Grevy’s and more of Kenya’s amazing animals.

The story takes place in Kenya. I took several trips to central Kenya between 2005 and 2009. I have a very strong attachment to the people, the animals and the landscape. To learn more about Kenya, see the Kenya Connection page.
