[video] Animatic for Scene 2

Yay! It’s finally done. It took a longer than I had thought, but mostly because I was trying very hard to up my storyboarding game. The people at Disney told me I should work on ‘clarity’ with my storyboards, so I focused on making the story beats as clear as possible.

This time I kept track of my working hours in a spreadsheet. The whole animatic took 55 hours and 18 minutes.

I spent 5 hours and 39 minutes working out the storyboards on paper.

I spent the rest of the 49 hours and 39 minutes drawing the storyboards in Photoshop and editing them together in Premiere (with some reworking done on paper).

I also spent some time trying to learn more about storyboarding. I drew storyboards by watching films frame by frame. I did this with ‘Princess Mononoke’ and ‘Up.’ I also read some books, my favorite of which is this one.

I hope you enjoy it! Let me know what you think. It’s just a first draft and it might change significantly before the end, so feel free to let me know how I can improve it!

[art] The cast of STRIPES

A few days ago, I did a sketch of the characters from Stripes:

I made three attempts to render the sketch into something more polished. If you can like any of these, you can buy a print for around $3.00 (including shipping)!

Stripes script registered with WGAW

I just registered the Stripes script with the Writer’s Guild of America, West [link]. Registration number: 1476096.

Not heart-stopping news, but I suddenly realized the other day that I should probably do that. Check!

[art] Scene 1 storyboard sketches

Here are some sketches I did while working on the animatic for scene 1. This is a very biased sample. I did many times this many drawings, and most of them were pretty bad!

[script] STRIPES script excerpt

I recently finished what I’m hoping to be the final major draft of the Stripes script. I’m pretty pleased with how it came out! Here’s an excerpt:

EXT. TARMAC ROAD – LATE MORNING

A raised tarmac road cuts through an expansive, arid landscape. The sheep and goats slowly ascend onto the road, clustering along its ragged edge. Patrick joins them, looking up and down the road. A rusted sedan passes by.

The coast clear, Patrick rushes the sheep and goats across the road. They walk as quickly as their short legs can manage. Ever vigilant, Patrick continually checks up and down the road.

A slumped, bored-looking John comes on the road following the last of the sheep. He waves his branch, but with much less enthusiasm then before.

He notices something interesting: A large DESERT TORTOISE pulls itself alongside the edge of the road.

[art] character design work

Here are some more concept drawings from the Stripes animated short I’m making. I was working on the designs for the main characters. Instead of having one solid, unchanging design, Japanese character designs often straddle between realism and caricature even within the same film. I really like this approach and want to do something similar with Stripes.

Toward the bottom are drawings of kids based on pictures a friend of mine took in Kenya.

I’ve written two-three drafts of story so far. It’s so challenging! But I will not give up until its really good! :D

[art] Kangas and the Opening Credits

Kangas are colorful, large pieces of cloth worn by people in many parts of Africa. They often have sayings printed on them. In Kenya, these sayings are often in Swahili.

I’m thinking about using kangas to the opening credits. I want the opening credits to be light and cheery, to let the audience know that the rest of the short is light-hearted as well.

I did a little research. A while back, I bought a book on kangas from the National Museum of Kenya. It’s called Kangas: 101 Uses by Jeannette Hanby and David Bygott. It’s a great little book with drawings and info about kangas. (There’s a few used copies on Amazon: Kangas: 101 Uses)

I also looked at the one kanga that I actually own. I have it hanging in my apartment:

Obama Kanga

Kanga with 'Congratulations Barack Obama' printed on it. I bought this gem in Nairobi in 2008, right after the US elections.

With the book and my Obama kanga as inspiration, I created a pattern in Flash:

kanga 1

Flash-drawn kanga

Then I took a picture of one of my white bedsheets by standing on a chair and taking the picture from above. I combined the images in photoshop for this:

kanga 1

Kanga design with texture

Then I decided that the design was too ‘perfect,’ as is the case when you use straight lines and shapes in Flash. So I decided to go over the whole thing hand-drawing the elements in Flash. I liked that better. I also added some zebras and a map of Africa:

Eventually, I think I will do a process like this for the opening credits, using lots of different kanga designs and animating their elements. I’ve had lots of ideas for the opening credits. I think they will be pretty fun!
